Please have your student listen to morning announcements for the first informational meeting to join debate!
The Merrill Middle School Debate Program is a student organization within the Des Moines Public School District. Debate students learn to be poised under scrutiny, practice composure under fire, and present their ideas in an organized, concise manner consistent with the expectations of college professors and employers the world over. All of these skills are acquired in a supportive environment that is conducive to high academic achievement and recognition of personal potential. Students in the Merrill debate program will compete in several competitive public forum events, all of which will help to hone their research skills, analytical ability, capacity for critical thinking, and interpersonal communication.
