The 1st Annual DMPS “Metro Girls Basketball Shootout” gets underway on Saturday, December 13th at 9:00 AM on the campus of East High School. Clemencia Spizzirri was born in Ecuador, where she also began her career as a teacher. A decade ago she moved to the U.S. and is now a teacher here at Merrill Middle School. Congratulations to the Merrill/Cowles Mock Trial team, which finished 9th at the 2014 Middle School Mock Trial State Championship held this week in Des Moines. Congrats to the Merrill/Cowles team for advancing, for the 2nd year in a row, to the Middle School Mock Trial State Tournament. The team is coached by Christina Thompson. Members are Chloe O’Connor, Louise Bequeaith, Ellery McAlister, Nyah Noyes, Helena Anderson, Bobby Briggs, Alice Medick, Jane Romp, and Rachel McNerny. The tournament begins November 17 in Des Moines.

Renovations at Merrill Middle School are mostly complete, giving Spanish language teachers and students permanent space and making the building more secure and handicap accessible. Des Moines Parks and Recreation and Des Moines Public Schools are partnering to offer a youth basketball league for the 2014-2015 season. The program is for students in grades 1st through 7th.
